April 23-29: Movies shown in #Leipzig in English and other original languages, and 3 alternative film festivals

Our regular Wednesday listing of movies playing in Leipzig in “OmU,” “OV” and “OF” for the next seven days has something extra to announce today: There are three (!) film festivals going on this movie week (Thurs-Wed) in Leipzig. All of them feature at least some movies not dubbed in German and instead shown in their original foreign languages (with some German mixed in if that’s originally in the movie too), which is what our listing is about. If you don’t want to read about the festivals, just scroll down to get straight to the general film listing itself, with festival and non-festival movies, mainstream and “alternative.”

One festival is called Mythos Freiheit, at the naTo Cinémathèque Leipzig. PLAYER:WEB, which is always right on the pulse of locally-shown cinema, describes the first installment of the festival, Körperthus (roughly translated): “The Cinémathèque traces human physicality in the first part of the [film festival] trilogy, asking questions regarding self-determination, freedom and social acceptance of changes in our appearance. Other topics (going against social barriers) include sexuality, body image, and last but not least the cult of the ‘body.’ Expert discussions [and debates with the audience] will complete the program.” The Körper installment will be on from 24/4-2/5, while the other two (“Geist” and “Seele”) are announced for autumn and winter 2015, but without specific dates as of yet.

Shorter in duration but comparably intriguing-sounding is GEGENkino, shown at Schaubühne Lindenfels from 23-25/4; PLAYER:WEB says that in it, “the theater presents for the second time a counter-proposal to common viewing habits and goes for it [by reaching] below the belt.” And finally, there’s Queerblick, held at Passage Kinos as a regular theme rather than a days-long festival: “In this series, Passage dedicates [its space] to gay and lesbian cinema. Shown is a mix of brand new films, some classics, and some gems being helped toward greater attention even after their DVD release,” writes PLAYER:WEB.

I specify in this listing which films are part of Mythos Freiheit, GEGENkino or Queerblick fests. Moreover, you can click on the film titles to find out what they’re about. Once again: They’re being played in their original foreign languages, English included – but most often with German subtitles, and sometimes even German parts if that’s in the original audio. So German speakers should not feel left out.
