A Syrian immigrant’s love poems

/

Last Friday night at Leipzig Writer’s Open Mic @Poniatowski I was deeply moved by the work of Abdulsalam, so I asked him if we could publish two of his poems here to share with you. As a special treat you can listen to him reading both the English and Arabic versions here.

Love

written by Abdulsalam Tarshahani

English translation by Bashar Al-Sadi

Love is a mysterious thing

And I’m sure that this love can’t be found in the time of peace.

Sometimes love is the opposite of war, sometimes it completes it.

Love is a storm that wipes out its opponents.

So take it from me

Believe in it,

Make up with it,

and shout out loud

I’m with it!

Take from it the peace of heart and the soul’s energy

Take from it the wildest dreams and the sounds of storms

Take from it the bright colors of flowers and lights

Take from it and let it grow bigger and bigger

For how O people, if we lived without love what would happen?

I know O people, if we lived without love

We will fall and fall and fall again.

Wondering

written by Abdulsalam Tarshahani

English translation by Bashar Al-Sadi

“They say Paris is the capital of love. As they say about Rome. But they are mistaken because love has many capitals and you are mine,” the lover said.

backdropped by the redness of the sunset

The beloved said,

“Since I’m your capital,

why did you occupy me

and steal my heart

and summarize my femininity in your poem?

I stole your heart to stay alive.

Because the heart’s pains

equal the number of roses in this world.

And I wanted our hearts to die together.

And we have to live like flutes.

And we have to impose happiness.

We glorify life

and we have to live together.

Live like miracles.”

The lover said,

“Who are you?

Oh my poet.

Who are you.

I do not know who am I.

I am nobody.

I do not know who am I,

to know why I plant aches in the words.

I do not know who am I

to know why I hold this grief in my palm

and write it

and after that,

grief cries for me because it feels my sufferings.

I do not know who am I.

I am just a strange common error

that loves life like a free bird,

flying lightly in his sky.

Now I know who am I.

I am a free bird flying so lightly to bury groans beneath peace

and say freedom is not a lie.
