Blake Baxter at Distillery

Blake Baxter: this is Detroit techno, bitches

in DJ/Party by

I have had many good nights at Distillery, but one stands out above the rest. I can’t remember why I went that particular night. I do remember I danced and danced and needed no drinks to keep me going: the music did that.

Blake Baxter was playing.

In one of my many former lives, I was a jungle DJ at a club in the States. I played a six hour set on Sundays. Each week, my friend would bring his system and set it up. We knew it was right when the water in the sinks vibrated into rings when the bass hit.

I learned a lot from him. He was a house DJ. He had vinyl from New York and Chicago, but my favorite was always the stuff coming out of Detroit. New York was kind of handbag, Chicago was more driving, and Detroit was crazy quirky funky shit.

Seven years ago, Blake Baxter played at Distillery. I knew he was from Detroit, and that had my expectations high before he hit the decks. He came out like a racehorse, playing some old stuff and throwing new shit in the mix. The energy was as smooth as it was pumping.

Best of all for us here in Leipzig, he’s BACK! And he’s playing at Distillery tonight.

He started spinning in the mid 80s. Distillery began in ’92, after the wall came down. Both are still going strong and neither is stuck in the past.

As a teen in Detroit, Blake started mixing hip hop and R&B, reggae and alternative rock on the dance floor at the Majestic Theater Club. He also started producing his own stuff in Detroit and got signed to Chicago’s DJ international record label.

In Chicago, he was like a kid in a candy store! Blake loved the Chicago house music sound, and was influenced by its industrial vibe. He took this further and is credited among many as one of the founders of Detroit house.

And the record and production deals flowed in as the music flowed out of the speakers. Somewhere along the way, he became the Prince of Techno.

I can’t wait to see what kind of crazy shit he mixes up tonight!
