Duckie L’Orange: the traveling puppeteer

//

Hi, I’m Duckie. Duckie L’Orange.

I am an artist specialising in an odd, mildly offensive brand of comedic puppetry. I spend my time sewing giant vaginas, figuring out what animals my body parts look like and lip syncing to dirty songs. I also create some far more wholesome family entertainment, though it is arguably just as weird.

I am an Australian and like many of my fellow nationals, I have an insatiable taste for travel. And so I am continually seeking out kindred spirits in the rest of the world. Germany has a fantastic reputation, and any average Joe will say that in Germany, the appreciation of culture is deep, the creative scene is rich, and multiculturalism is thriving.

So far, this has only proven to be true. It all seems to be falling into place. After just two weeks in town, I was already invited to perform at the Shameless Comedy Showcase at Noch Besser Leben.

The first time I visited Leipzig was in the spring seven years ago. I was amazed with how lively and beautiful it was, especially compared with other European cities on the backpacker trail. I was immediately welcomed by strangers, taken on a tour of the local art collectives, to a gorgeous lake, and to a raging all night punk festival.

I’m so excited & lucky to be able to visit this city again.

And this time to arrive and participate in something special. Shameless is the epitome of what I’d heard – a mash up of creative, crazy culture, presented by people from around the world. Where else can you see puppetry from Australia, a Theremin cod-piece, Malaysian epic fantasy music, a Siberian scientist-cum-funny lady, local Leipzig legends and a hilarious Colombian goddess via New York?

It will be hilarious, bizarre and unique. I can’t wait.

Duckie is an Australian puppeteer with a twist. She does weird and wacky interactive performances for kids, and equally wacky but significantly dirtier shows for adults. She’s been all around town like a hipster on a vintage bicycle – performing at the Sydney Opera House Kids & Families, barking in a steam punk carnival with Antigua i Barbuda at Sydney Festival, telling stories at the Au Chat Noir in Paris, cheeky fun with BIZARRE Bushwick in NYC…
