Help finding the right doctor who speaks your language

It is important to get medical care when you need it. But as a non-native German speaker, it can sometimes be difficult and intimidating to discuss important health issues in German. Finding doctors who can speak English or other languages is important. This page contains information that may be helpful, and a list of doctors who speak English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Dutch, Persian and Albanian based on recommendations from our community.

KVS catalogue: The most comprehensive page for English-speaking doctors in Leipzig

In the state of Saxony, there is an organisation of doctors who provide care covered by the obligatory statutory health insurance: “Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Sachsen” (KVS; Eng: “Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Saxony”). They host a catalogue of doctors, therapists and other health care providers and include information on language skills. It is possible to search and filter for providers who speak English, Romanian and many other languages.

How to include language in KVS search

Under “Zusatzangaben,” open the drop-down menu “Fremdsprache” and select the relevant language.

If you struggle with the search interface being in German, you can use an automatic translation service like DeepL or Google Translate.

To see more about a specific healthcare provider, click “Detailansicht anzeigen” on the map for the doctor or the magnifying glass in the list of search results to see contact details and other information.

Advice on the phone at home

In case of an emergency, call 112. But if you are home and want medical advice in a non-emergency situation, you can call 116 117 and talk to a qualified professional (the service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week). The service is primarily provided in German, but you may be able to find an English speaker if you insist—especially if it’s between 9.00 and 17.00.

Doctor reviews

Before committing to a doctor, it can be useful to know other patients’ experiences. The most popular doctor reviewing platform is Jameda, a privately run website that makes it possible for patients to review doctors and other health care providers. The company is a private business and it is worth keeping in mind that doctors who pay for a “premium” package will appear higher in search results. Jameda is fully in German, so a Google Translate web browser plug-in or similar is necessary if you do not know German. 

There are Facebook groups etc where people personally recommend healthcare providers or ask for recommendations, such as Leipzig Expats.

Translation for medical settings

If you do need to go to a doctor who does not speak a language you understand, there aren’t many options. The clinic may ask that you bring a friend or family member to translate for you. If you feel comfortable, this option can work. But just because someone is bilingual in English and German does not necessarily mean they are a competent medical interpreter. Furthermore, since medical matters can be sensitive and intimate, it may not be ideal to have a family member or friend present.

There is a group of volunteers in Leipzig who can come with you to appointments for free and interpret: CoMedS; https://sturamed-leipzig.de/partner/comeds-2/ . Their email is comeds-leipzig@riseup.net.

The University Hospital in Leipzig provides many medical documents in other languages besides English. Getting a referral from your Hausartz (General Practitioner) can be a really good option. Besides the translated documents, they also have many young doctors who speak English.

We would like it to gradually become as complete as possible, although we cannot take responsibility for the quality, actual language proficiency, availability or level of friendliness of the doctors or their staff.

We’ve included a few Arabic-speaking doctors, as well as French, Spanish, Dutch, Persian, and Albanian-speakers, also from international friends’ recommendations. If you know of doctors who speak any foreign languages (NOT ONLY ENGLISH), please send their contact information along.
