What’s on?

Exit Stage Right is hitting the stage of Neues Schauspiel Leipzig right in time to orchestrate the Brexit swansong and other leave-takings in an artistic way. And since breaking up is hard to do, taking your leave often brings about issues that have your emotions reach boiling point. Whether you kiss goodbye or wallow in the mud of a long separation process, the feelings and emotions evoked are as multifarious and maddeningly complicated as they come.

Why the big leave?

We’re all faced with the experience of separation and loss on many occasions in our lives. Dealing with it puts us through a lot of emotional stress and upheaval – it hits us in the bone marrow. Take the bedlam that is Brexit, for example, and you’d only need to watch a lower-house session to be made privy to the rigours of human misery.

On other occasions, a departure can give birth to a new chapter in life that offers opportunity and happiness. Like the cumbersome struggle of a caterpillar during pupation, unaware of the transition into the great monarch butterfly it is suffering. A bittersweet tussle at the junction from one chapter of our lives to the next.

What’s in it?

In comes the latest production of English Theatre Leipzig, to adopt the theme of leaving and to examine it through a series of vignettes. As many as six directors have taken up the cause of departure in various ways of theatrical realisation. Be it a short skit, an extract from a larger piece or a freshly-written soliloquy – they all send us off to a different fare-well.

The scenes depicted by ETL’s directors seize on a wide range of authors, while adding some of the directors’ own texts on occasion to allow for a more intrinsic perspective. Go get your ticket now to explore the emotional rollercoaster that comes with those long stages of grief. Or, as Shakespeare had Juliet say once, “parting is such sweet sorrow.”

A cosmopolitan butterfly that feels at home where people are friendly and coffee is strong. As a person with a wide range of interests and a low attention span, he succumbs to the charm of novelty all too readily. Literature, film, photography and politics on Mondays, playing dead and g(r)ooming dogs on Tuesdays. Hand him a beer and he’ll talk about football, tell him a lie and he’ll tell you two.
