Leipzig Events: Slam for democracy, poetry and jazz, autumn market, children’s flea market, warm-up for a new cafe… where will you land?

Feeling adventurous? Spin the roulette. Whatever date you land on is a lucky one for you in terms of fun this weekend. (And no, we don’t condone actual gambling… the roulette is just a metaphor.)

September 25th ► LeipJAZZig – series of jazz concerts at plan b

The folks from Jorinde Jelen und Band take the stage at 8 p.m. To whet your appetite: “In their new songs, poems of romance with wonderful lightness float on jazzy scores. The beguiling, nocturnal thoughts of Rilke, Goethe or Morgenstern are reinterpreted by the band.” For more on the show (in German), visit the plan b Web site.

September 26th ► FreiraumSLAM

To kick off the local poetry slam season while helping celebrate the 4th International Democracy Conference being held simultaneously in Leipzig, a slam will be organized at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz at 7 p.m. Entry is free. Hosted by the hilarious Christian Meyer from The Fuck Hornisschen Orchestra, it promises to feature the top local acts. More information on the event’s Facebook page.

September 26th & 27th ► Mendelssohn House special events

Guided tour and quite a few performances going on those days; but actually they are pretty active most of the time. More info on their online calendar.

► Antiques Market at AGRA

Every last weekend of the month the Agra Grounds transform into a giant second-hand market, both indoor & outdoor. Consider cycling there or taking a tram. For contact info, directions and such (in German), visit their Web site.

September 26th – October 4th ► Leipziger Markttage

To celebrate the harvest month the city centre comes alive with stalls full of food & drink, art & culture, an artisan market (Salzgäβchen) and activities for children (Familiengarten, Augustusplatz). Highlights include performance of wind orchestra Blaswerk Leipzig, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27th, on stage at the Markt. September 27th ► Kawi Kids Flea Market – Kawi Kids Kinder Flohmarkt

Second-hand market, held several times a year, for every thinkable child-related item, like clothes, toys, strollers, books, bikes etcetera. The indoor baby/toddler playground Kawi Kids is in Südvorstadt, at August-Bebel-Straβe 9. More info (in German) is available via the Kawi Kids Web site.

The grand opening day of my intercultural family Café homeLE may still be a solid two months away, but for me it’s already up and rolling. Thanks to a number of events coming up which homeLE either hosts or participates in. So if you’re curious to taste some awesome Nicaraguan coffee or get your hands on the signature waffles on a stick, am looking forward to meet you at one of the following events:

Sat, Sept 26th: No waffles but all about India! Join me for the first “Kultour” of the “Indian” Leipzig, which takes off at Felsenkeller, Plagwitz. More info…

Wed/Thur Oct 21st-22nd: Catch a glimpse of the upcoming Café homeLE during the first Startup Safary in Leipzig. Join me and two other founders for a discussion round on the topic of “Don’t think to much! Just do it” and also get a coffee flavoured tour of the new venue. More info…
