Out of the shadows…

The theme for our events post today is “out of the shadows.” Why? First of all, I was inspired by the exhibit, running March 9th-May 29th, commemorating 25 years of the annual Gothic Fest in Leipzig, the largest of such festivals in the world. (Thus the photo of the beautiful lady above – taken by Marjon at last year’s fest; you can access more photos in our Wave Gotik Treffen gallery, by the way, and some gothic-related music musings and examples too.) You can find more info about said event – “Leipzig in Schwarz, 25 Jahre Wave Gotik Treffen” – on the exhibit’s Web site.

Second of all, it’s a weekend to be out and about exploring different markets, as there are plenty: Antik- & Trödelmarkt on Festplatz am Cottaweg (March 4th-6th), Feinkost Flohmarkt at Feinkost-Hof (March 5th), and Flea Market at the Alte Messe (March 6th).

And not to forget – it’s a time to commemorate how far we’ve come but also to reflect on how far we still need to go to bring everyone “out of the shadows” and into equal rights and opportunities. From March 10th-23rd, Leipzig will hold toLEranz, “international weeks against racism,” with “all kinds of events and meet-ups all over town,” according to Marjon, who provided a link to the program (as well as most of the events tips for today and as usual). Also, International Women’s Day is on March 8th, and you can join the city’s related special events starting on March 6th and a feminist-themed anti-Legida protest on March 7th. While on the topic of women’s liberation, if you’ve got a few bucks to spare, you can participate in a crowdfunding campaign to get “green”outside furniture in time for spring for the cozy intercultural café HomeLE, run solo by a female entrepreneur, Maike Steuer. She bakes sehr lecker sweet stuff and makes all the coffee and does all the promotion and organizes exhibits and concerts at her beloved and recently opened Gohlis café, all while raising her son.
