Here’s our regular listing of movies being shown in English and other original languages (with labels such as OmU, OF and OV) at Leipzig cinemas for the next seven days (eight, actually, including today). Although not dubbed, they often come with German subtitles, so you can still access the movie if you don’t know the original language but know some German. The list includes the 3-D blockbuster Jurassic World, playing tonight (June 17), Sunday, Monday and next Wednesday, as well as some more alternative films and related activities. For instance, a grunge party will follow the showing of Cobain: Montage of Heck Saturday evening.
Also, the Sommerkino auf der Feinkost, with a huge screen set up at the Feinkost complex in Südvorstadt for the “summer” evenings (German summer needs quotation marks), continues this week, featuring Oscar-winner Birdman on Sunday. The movie is a bit strange, to say the least, but the acting and cinematography are impressive, looking as if the whole movie had been done in one shot. Recently I went to the Sommerkino with some friends and watched John Wick, an action thriller featuring Keanu Reeves, and I must say it was much better than I expected. I’d never seen Keanu Reeves express so much emotion and even tenderness, alternating with a machine-like ruthlessness toward those who so carelessly kicked him where it hurt the most. He must’ve taken notes from Liam Neeson, the master of “I’m taking an entire cartel down with a few punches and shots for messing with my peeps or peace of mind, because I’m awesome.” Yes. Keanu Reeves should stick with action films. I saw a romantic film featuring him once where his idea of a passionate, bleeding-heart message to his elusive lady love was sounding like he was reading names off of a phone book.
