Here’s our regular listing of films being shown in English and other original languages (with labels such as OmU, OF and OV) at Leipzig cinemas for this movie week. Although not dubbed, they often come with German subtitles, so you can still access the movie if you don’t know the original language but know some German. The list includes the 3-D blockbuster Jurassic World, playing tonight (June 24) and next Wednesday (July 1) at Cinestar, as well as a decent variety of more alternative films. I must say, I went in to watch Jurassic World the other day expecting it to be just a remake of the 1993 sci-fi adventure classic, only set 22 years later and with better special effects, but was pleasantly surprised. There’s actually some palpable depth to the movie as a critique of the savage jungle of capitalism (excuse the pun), and the acting was quite decent. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 71/100 rating, which I think is not bad at all for a big adventure and special effects movie.
Also, the Sommerkino auf der Feinkost, with a huge screen set up at the Feinkost complex in Südvorstadt for this season, continues this movie week with two features in English: Whiplash, a tough-love, inspirational kind of music movie; and The F-Word, a romantic comedy featuring Daniel Radcliffe (who has come a long way and shown that he can play a range of roles since his Harry Potter days).
