Here’s our regular listing of films being shown in English and other original foreign languages (with labels such as OmU, OF and OV) at Leipzig cinemas for this movie week. Although not dubbed, they often come with German subtitles, so you can still access the movie if you don’t know the original language but know some German.
My recommendation this time around is the figuratively and at times literally dizzying movie Victoria, directed by the German Sebastian Schipper. It’s mostly in English (subtitled in German), shot in one take in real time in Berlin, and quite a cinematic achievement, in my opinion, packing the gamut of emotions within a mere two hours. I thought it was just going to be a movie about this girl’s nightlife exploits when she happens to meet a bunch of guys, which it is in a way; but there’s so much more this young, easy-going, independent, somewhat dejected, thrill-seeking foreigner, recently arrived in Germany, encounters. I could see some of myself in her, and felt much along with her, including that I, too, was thrown into the middle of the action. I’d say it’s a bit like one of my favorite movies, Before Sunrise, but on steroids. Do yourself a favor and read nothing else about Victoria before you see it (in the hyperlink with the title I’ve provided only the movie’s Facebook page). I think it’s quite worth the surprise. Oh, and it’s playing every day this movie week, at theaters all over town.
This movie week also features the documentary Amy in the original, claiming to present “the girl behind the legend.” I’m excited but at the same time a bit cautious. I’ve been a bit of a fan of its subject, Amy Winehouse, for years, so I have to see the portrayal for myself before saying anything about it… although the film is pretty decently rated on IMDB and very highly so on Rotten Tomatoes. And it’s also playing every day this movie week in Leipzig, at both Passage Kinos and Kinobar Prager Frühling.
