Literary autumn arrives at Baileo

///

A literary autumn has reached Leipzig 22 times.

For this season, the annual creative treat celebrates the “silver” (25th) anniversary of the Leipzig-Houston City Sisterhood. Known as the Leipziger Literarischer Herbst, the festival will run 23-31 October 2018 with the theme “Building Bridges.” It will focus on American and specifically Houstonian literature, as well as related or multicultural topics.

The literary autumn week will spread readings and creativity across different types of Leipzig venues, all over town.

Baileo (the gorgeous dance school where our open mics take place) will host two of them, with LeipGlo’s support. These two events are the brainchild of renowned author Svetlana Lavochkina. She is also a LeipGlo contributor, judge of our 1003 Nights of Leipzig contest, and editor of the Bridges of Com(passion) series inspired by the festival’s theme.

Here’s what she’s got for us, as part of Literarischer Herbst:

1. The Windrose of Dreams

28.10.2018, 8 PM – 9:30 PM

“Svetlana Lavochkina offers samples, in English original language and German translation, from her novels Zap and Dam Duchess, published in the US. Both stories are based in Ukraine and the USA. The author and translator is a Ukrainian native, lives in Leipzig and publishes her works in English in the USA and Great Britain. She is a finalist of the Paris Literary Prize 2013 and winner of the London Tibor & Jones Pageturner Prize 2015. The author sees the main task of her work as a literary link between languages and cultures.”

Talk & reading: Svetlana Lavochkina

2. Bridges of (Com)passion

31.10.2018, 7 PM – 9 PM

“These high school students (Free Waldorf School) took a close look at the ‘Bridges’ theme – from the literal-physical… [and beyond] to the metaphorical passionate-empathetic connections among people, professions, vocations, countries. The young artists were inspired by various ‘New Leipzigers,’ and these encounters resulted in poetry, short prose and mini-essays in English and German. Art photography and jazz music round out the atmospheric setting.”
