Yasmine Hamdan is a woman that gave blood to many a vampire-enthusiast’s heart with her cameo appearance in Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive. She’s quite an impressive woman, that Yasmine. It’s the self-assured (and very gorgeous) appearance in Jarmusch’s ode to darkness that lets her take center stage just when she starts to sing. Listen to the somber tones of a deep and well-controlled baritone, radiating the desire of a brooding volcano to erupt. Match it with a very feminine appearance in black western clothes to evoke quite an intriguing and beguiling picture.

#MoviesOmU: Original foreign language version showings in Leipzig, May 7-13

in Arts/Culture / Entertainment

Here’s our Wednesday listing of non-dubbed (OmU, OF, OV, etc.) movies being shown at Leipzig cinemas for the next seven days. They usually have German subtitles, so you can still access the movie if you don’t know the original language but know some German. Our listing indicates, when possible, which language they are being played in, the genre, etc. For movie descriptions, just click on the titles.

Arts and Culture: an illustrated narrative of Tanzoffensive 2015

in Arts/Culture / Entertainment

This weekend was so packed with things to do in Leipzig that I almost just stayed home from the sheer pressure of making the decision. In the end I opted for my passion, dance. And what better place to experience that than at TANZOFFENSIVE. It’s a two-week festival organized by The Lofft that takes place every two years and never disappoints me. This year’s theme is “Show.” They are seeing how close contemporary dance can get to circus, street dance and social dance and still be considered an art form.
