In good company: teaching to intel

//

The Leipzig Glocal Job Fair at WERK 2 will bring together over 20 different companies looking for talented internationally-minded people in Leipzig. We thought it important for you to get more insight into who these exhibitors are, and what they look for in job applicants, ahead of the event on 13 November 2018. To that end, we asked them questions about their particular company culture, their expectations as employers, and how they help their staff balance their work-life commitments.

Today we present you the following job fair exhibitors: Teach First Deutschland, which places graduates in teaching assignments in challenging classrooms in Germany (so as a candidate, you need to know German); tech company Dell, which offers positions in various fields at its Halle office; and business intelligence company dii, which specializes in the healthcare industry and hires researchers and interviewers (various languages) on a regular basis.

Meet Teach First Deutschland

What is your company about?

The success of children at school in Germany still depends heavily on their parents’ background, education or social status. We from Teach First Germany think that shouldn’t be!

We want to take responsibility for change and have therefore developed a leadership program in which committed graduates of all disciplines work full-time (paid, of course) for two years as so-called fellows in schools in socially challenging surroundings. Students with poor starting conditions receive individual support. Directly in the classroom and beyond, in project days organized by our fellows.

What is your company culture like?

As a Fellow in the Leadership Program of Teach First Germany, you work in schools in a socially challenging environment. You are confronted with the often difficult life situations of young adults who associate failure and frustration with school. This is challenging, but with your work in class and project days, you can improve the lives of some students and help them discover what they are capable of! You show the way out of their perceived lack of prospects! This strengthens and fulfills you and your students.

Let’s go beyond the CV. What kind of candidate fits your company culture?

Teach First Deutschland is looking for committed graduates with above-average grades who know about education inequity in Germany and may have been active against that issue in youth organizations, NGOs (non-governmental organizations), political parties or trade unions. But also in sports clubs, orchestras or the like.

Pedagogical knowledge is not necessary, because before their employment in the school, our Fellows are intensively trained by us and also accompanied and supported during their employment.

Let’s say that a candidate does not have a degree or work experience directly related to your company’s services. Would you still consider hiring them?

In order to work as a Fellow at Teach First Germany, applicants need at least a Bachelor’s degree. This is a requirement of the Ministries of Education of the federal states, with which we are in close contact before our program can start in a federal state. Interested people do not need previous work or educational experience, only social commitment and enthusiasm for education.

Work-life balance. How does your company accommodate professional development of your employees and their personal lives?

During their employment, our Fellows are closely accompanied by us and can contact us anytime in case of problems and difficulties. In addition, every three months there is a meeting of all Fellows of a federal state, where space for exchange is created and solutions to problems and difficulties can be discussed. That way we want to ensure that our Fellows feel understood, strengthened and supported.

Meet dii

What is your company about?

Data information intelligence (dii), now a part of the Economist Intelligence Unit, is an international market research and business consultancy company. It undertakes research, often on behalf of our clients, in the medical and healthcare diagnostic markets, including medical devices and imaging.

What is your company culture like?

We have an open and friendly atmosphere. We have team events / parties often throughout the year, and we like to see ourselves as one big international family, rather than just a company. We like to eat our lunch together daily, and we’re the kind of work colleagues who will invite you to a night out or to a sporting event, or even offer to help you move furniture if you’re changing apartments!

Let’s go beyond the CV. What kind of candidate fits your company culture?

Any candidate who doesn’t mind pitching in when required, is open and transparent about their work, isn’t afraid to ask questions, and absolutely loves to learn new things – especially about healthcare! – is welcome at dii!

Let’s say that a candidate does not have a degree or work experience directly related to your company’s services. Would you still consider hiring them?

We don’t require our interviewers and researchers to have a degree or work experience directly related to market research. We look for people who are friendly, willing to learn and apply the effort, and ideally who have dealt with customers or consumers in some shape or form. If you speak a European language and you like a challenge, you’re more than welcome.

Work-life balance. How does your company accommodate professional development of your employees and their personal lives?

Work-life balance is really important to us at dii. That’s why we have a very flexible approach to working hours. We’re not going to demand you do 9-5; you work as much as you think you are able to. If that’s 15 hours a week, that’s great – and you can choose what days and hours you want to work.
